How Angola LNG manages complex cargo hydrocarbon accounting on EnergySys.
Angola LNG is one of the largest single investments in Angola’s oil and gas industry, a $12 billion project with a 5.2 million tonne per year LNG capacity, a dedicated fleet of seven vessels, and a 500km pipeline network supplying the plant at Soyo. Since the first cargo in June 2013, the project has delivered over 400 LNG cargoes to more than 25 countries across the world.
Managing the hydrocarbon accounting behind that operation demands precision at every step.
Challenge: high cargo frequency, complex contracts, and no room for error
Angola LNG’s hydrocarbon accounting requirements are demanding. A high frequency of cargoes, bespoke sales contracts with different customers and different terms, and evolving regulatory expectations all need to be handled accurately, consistently, and with a full audit trail.
Their existing tools couldn’t keep up. Manual interventions, spreadsheets, and a patchwork of legacy systems struggled with the volume and variability of cargo nominations. Maintaining accurate entitlements and shipping calculations across constantly shifting schedules was high-risk and labour-intensive. Different contractual terms meant every cargo carried unique commercial implications. And the audit and compliance requirements for an operation of Angola LNG’s scale were non-negotiable.
Angola LNG needed a platform that could handle contractual complexity at the cargo level, give operators, finance teams, and partners consistent access to accurate data, and maintain the auditability that compliance demands.
Solution: configurable allocation logic, automated data flows, and a full audit trail
Angola LNG selected the EnergySys Cloud Platform, with reseller partner Accord Energy Solutions handling the implementation.
The platform was configured to handle dynamic cargo allocation and tracking, with allocation logic adapted to each contract’s specific rules. Every shipment reflects a contractually accurate value distribution, calculated transparently and consistently without manual intervention.
Data from plant operations and shipping schedules flows automatically into the platform, producing up-to-date dashboards and reports for stakeholders across geographies. The manual data handling that previously created both bottlenecks and errors was removed from the process.
Every calculation, adjustment, and data flow is logged, versioned, and fully explainable. Angola LNG can meet audit and compliance obligations with confidence, with a complete record of how every figure was derived.
The project was delivered entirely remotely, from workshops through to go-live, with no requirement for on-site presence.
Outcomes: accurate, auditable, and built for a high-frequency cargo operation
- Dynamic cargo allocation configured to each contract’s specific terms, giving every shipment a contractually accurate, transparent value distribution.
- Automated data ingestion from plant operations and shipping schedules, eliminating manual data handling and reducing the risk of error.
- A complete, versioned audit trail for every calculation and adjustment, supporting compliance and regulatory reporting with confidence.
- Stakeholders across geographies accessing consistent, up-to-date data without relying on manual reports or data requests.
- Full remote delivery from workshops to go-live.
The bottom line.
Angola LNG operates one of Africa’s most significant LNG projects, delivering cargoes to over 25 countries from a $12 billion facility on the Angolan coast. The hydrocarbon accounting behind that operation needs to be accurate, auditable, and capable of handling bespoke commercial arrangements at scale.
EnergySys gives Angola LNG’s team the platform to manage that, with Accord providing the configuration expertise to make it work precisely for their commercial model.
