Before You Sign: 3 Questions Every Energy Tech Buyer Should Ask

By Kirsty ArmitageNo Comments3 min read

The fourth in a four-part guide for energy leaders navigating the full buyer journey.

Click for parts one, two and three.

By the time you reach supplier selection, the excitement of the demo has worn off. You’ve seen the features, read the roadmaps, and heard every vendor call themselves “innovative” and “industry-leading.”

Now it’s time to make a decision that will shape your reporting integrity, compliance posture, and operational agility for years. Possibly a decade.

So before you sign, here are three questions worth asking every vendor on your shortlist.

Why this decision carries weight.

Hydrocarbon accounting and production allocation are not side tasks. They underpin revenue recognition, joint venture settlements, regulatory filings, and strategic decisions.

When the platform can’t keep pace, the consequences spread quickly: delayed reporting, manual workarounds that erode confidence in your data, and systems too rigid to adapt when assets or contracts change.

1. Can we control our own destiny?

If you need the vendor for every change, you’re tied to their timelines, their budgets, and their priorities.

Look for a platform where domain experts, not just IT teams, can configure allocation logic, data models, and business rules themselves. Permissions should reflect how your organisation actually works.

Ask about upgrades, too. A well-designed platform rolls out changes without breaking your setup and without additional fees.

2. How fast can we move?

Assets change hands. Markets shift. Data arrives late. Speed matters.

Traditional onboarding can take months and often involves large teams of consultants. Cloud-native platforms, implemented by specialist reseller partners who already understand your domain, can be up and running in weeks.

Ask how long a typical implementation takes and who does the work.

3. What happens when things change?

This is the question most buyers forget to ask.

A good platform doesn’t just handle change. It’s built for it. One EnergySys customer went from raising multiple vendor change requests each year to raising none, giving their team the space to focus on work that actually adds value.

Ask for examples. Ask what the process looks like when a contract changes, a new asset comes online, or a reporting requirement shifts.

From compatibility to capability.

Choosing a platform isn’t about fitting your current state. It’s about enabling where you want to go.

In an industry where precision and adaptability are everything, you need a platform that moves with you. And a partner who knows the terrain.
