While we’ve been building out our new redundant infrastructure for energysys.com, I’ve been using the Get Console iPad app quite extensively, in combination with the Redpark C2-RJ45 console cable. The latter seems expensive to me, and the lack of protection of the RJ-45 pin is disappointing given it will probably be thrown in a bag with other cables, but it does the job.
With that caveat, the convenience of being able to connect quickly and easily to the console ports on Cisco ASA firewalls, Cisco 2960s switches, and Oracle Sun Fire servers (these are all products I’ve tried) is pretty compelling. The lack of a physical keyboard is a little restricting, but that’s also what makes it so quick and easy to carry and use.
In addition, the 3G capability of the iPad makes it easy to access manuals and the web for guidance before full Internet access is enabled.
Best of all, though, is that it’s one more justification for getting an iPad!
